Everyone who enters the path of a doctor, today, as well as millennia ago, takes an oath: And although this is not the Hippocratic Oath, this phrase has become a household word for medical oaths all over the world.
The famous ancient Greek physician and healer Hippocrates was born around 460 BC and went down in history as the "father of medicine". He belonged to the family of the descendants of Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing. The Asclepiades passed on their medical knowledge from generation to generation, from father to son, from teacher to student, so all the relatives and descendants of Hippocrates were also doctors. It was among them that the oath appeared, prescribing respect not only for patients, but also for teachers, students and colleagues.
Hippocrates brought medicine out of the dark ideas about the divine origin of diseases to the light of scientific foundations. Brilliant observation and logical reasoning, accurate prediction of the course of diseases during his lifetime brought him well-deserved fame.
More legends and legends are known about the life of Hippocrates than facts; he is credited with authorship of over 70 works of that time, although only 8 are reliably belonging to his pen ("On Air, Waters and Localities", "On Winds", "Prognostics", "On diet in acute diseases", the first and third books "Epidemics", "Aphorisms", "About joints" and "About fractures").
To this list should be added works of an ethical orientation ("Oath", "Law", "On the doctor", "On decent behavior", "Instructions"), in which issues were discussed that had not previously been raised in medicine: about the responsibility of a doctor, about his personal qualities, about the importance of observing medical secrecy, about the humanism of medicine in general.
Hippocrates considered medicine and philosophy to be important sciences that exist within strict boundaries, but in inseparable unity with each other, therefore, in our publication we have included quotations and aphorisms of this great healer and philosopher, devoted not only to medical aspects, but also related to eternal questions and truths that make up the human worldview from ancient times to today of the day.
The publication includes "The Hippocratic Oath", "The Oath of the Russian Doctor", as well as portraits of famous doctors who have contributed to world medicine since its appearance in the history of mankind.
