Since those distant years, vigorously traveling and living in different parts of the world, spinning the globe in the hope of finding, like Nabokov, my daisies and Rachmaninov, my lilacs, I have been looking for jewelers who could bring my dreams and childhood discoveries to life in precious metal. And so in the fall of 2019, at an etiquette brunch in my favorite St. Petersburg Astoria, which I arranged for clients, an elegant lady, the mother of two brothers, regulars of my course, presented me with a silver spoon of "Russian gems" with lilac flowers. My eyes flashed!
And in my life, my full namesake Tatyana Polyakova, the artist of "Russian Gems", who painted my herbarium from memory, also appeared. I also checked the slope of the stems, and the shades, and the proportions according to those Tver happy childhood memories. And, as it turned out, the best, free, beautiful, fragrant and precious memories of a lifetime.
In the summer of 2020, my mother left, who taught me to potted non-wilting flowers that were transplanted into gardens and lawns. Shortly before her death, symbolically, my first jewelry herbarium of 25 plants saw the light.
With these modest natural compositions found in the copses of forest violets, my unconditional love for cultivated velvety and brazenly beautiful pansies began. I did not know the legend of the unrequited love of the gentle Anyuta at that time. Children's legends of feelings and experiences are different for everyone. But my love for violets – quiet, faithful and constant, like everything childish, remained. Feelings, like beauty, must be seen. Nature has suggested this to us, combining contrasting shades in inflorescences with bright greens of leaves and stems, attracting emotional brightness. Nature itself has formed a bouquet. The jewelers and I repeated the attacks of the flowers, the bends of the leaves protecting and supporting the flowers, and their spread.
The delicate, elegant violet is the hero of the secular, spiritual, and ceremonial life of many cultures since the time of the ancient Romans and Greeks. Bouquets of violets were pinned into hair, hats, corsets and dresses were decorated with them, then they were painted on the labels of crystal bottles and perfumes. I add candied violet petals to champagne and sometimes to tea.
There is a confirmation of this devotion of mine: the violets embedded in the books from the summer literary programs are with me now. I still react the same way to all violet themes. Images and words are loved by my close friend, born in Russian Voronezh, in beautiful Milan. Among the first, this bouquet created by St. Petersburg jewelers and enamellers will be delivered by the postman to her. As a sign of love devoted to native addresses and names.
And that's why I'm going to pin silver violets and wear them solo. On lace, on silk, on rough hand knitting, yes! On the brims of hats, on the knots of bows and on the lapels of business suits. Brooches, like flowers, are signs and symbols of distinction. And the endless pleasure that came from beauty.
